Entitlement Sprawl: What It Is and How to Control It in the Cloud

Entitlement sprawl (also called privilege creep) is the gradual accumulation of unused or excessive cloud permissions across human and machine identities. Machine identities now outnumber humans 80-to-1, making this primarily a non-human identity problem. Every excess permission expands blast radius — a compromised over-permissioned identity gives attackers everything it can reach without needing further escalation. Detection requires comparing effective permissions (what an identity can actually do after all roles and policies resolve) against observed usage, not just static IAM exports. Six controls are recommended: enforce least privilege with right-sizing, replace standing access with just-in-time access, run continuous automated access reviews, use RBAC/ABAC with strict policy hygiene, govern non-human identities with owners and expiries, and apply Zero Trust principles.
