Inside Unified Planner: The AI Brain Behind Agentforce

Salesforce engineer Gaurav Aggarwal explains how the Unified Planner was built as a single AI execution and reasoning engine powering all Agentforce agents across voice, chat, and text. Previously, separate runtimes (Agent Graph for reasoning, Voice Planner for low-latency) had evolved independently, causing duplication and inconsistency. Unified Planner solved this by separating platform-managed concerns from customer-defined workflows, enabling aggressive parallel execution of tasks like prompt injection detection, citation generation, and knowledge retrieval. This reduced response latency from ~20 seconds to ~2.3 seconds. The architecture also supports MuleSoft without Salesforce-specific dependencies and is designed to extend to future modalities like video, where multimodal reasoning across simultaneous data streams presents the next major engineering challenge.
