Microsoft to enable Windows settings backup by default for orgs
Microsoft is changing the Windows settings backup and restore tool (formerly Windows Backup for Organizations) to be enabled by default on Microsoft Entra-joined enterprise devices starting with Windows 11 26H2. Previously opt-in since its November 2024 unveiling and general availability in August 2025, the default-on behavior will apply only to eligible devices in non-EU DMA regions with no explicit policy set. IT admins retain full control via MDM, Microsoft Intune, or Group Policy. The restore behavior remains opt-in and requires explicit admin configuration. The feature can be tested early via the Windows Insider Program Experimental channel starting July 2026, with broad rollout at Windows 11 26H2 general availability later this year.
