MLOps Fundamentals: What Actually Changes When You Put ML Into Production Part-1

MLOps is what happens when DevOps discipline meets machine learning systems — and the two are not the same thing. Unlike traditional software where only code changes, ML systems have three independent axes of change: code, data, and the trained model artifact itself. This means a model can silently degrade in production without anyone touching a single line of code, purely because the real world shifted underneath it (drift). The post walks through the core practices that make ML systems operable: experiment tracking (MLflow), data versioning (DVC/LakeFS), model registries with lifecycle staging, and feature stores to prevent training-serving skew. It also extends the CI/CD mental model to CI/CD/CT/CM, adding Continuous Training and Continuous Monitoring as genuinely new pipeline stages. A Google-style three-level MLOps maturity model is presented, with practical advice that most organizations should focus on getting experiment tracking and a model registry in place before attempting full automation.
