Mesa on Android: How We Brought Turnip, SkiaVK, and Cuttlefish to CI

Turnip, the open source Mesa Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs, has achieved official Vulkan 1.3 conformance on Adreno 6xx hardware, including a conformance run executed directly on Android — a first for any Mesa driver. Getting there required solving deep architectural challenges around Android's deferred image creation model for gralloc-backed buffers, building generic multi-queue emulation to support SkiaVK's rendering backend, and standing up Cuttlefish-based Android CI with three GPU modes (Lavapipe, Venus, and DRM Native Context) so real Adreno hardware can be tested pre-merge. Turnip will also be included upstream in AOSP's mesa3d tree in upcoming Android releases.

This complements the kernel-side AMDGPU support already merged for Linux 7.3, enabling these older cards to work with Vulkan-based Wayland compositors, better OpenGL/Vulkan interoperability, and Zink-based OpenGL-on-Vulkan setups. Linux 7.3 stabilizes in October and Mesa 26.3 in November; GFX9 and newer GPUs already had this support.

Erik Faye-Lund, a longtime Mesa contributor known for his work on Zink, the PanVK Vulkan driver, and the Panfrost Gallium3D driver for Arm Mali GPUs, has joined Arm directly after eight years at Collabora. He will continue upstream PanVK and Panfrost development and remain on the X.Org Board of Directors. He cited fundamental disagreements with Collabora's leadership and frustrations with working as a contractor in Norway (tax filing, sick leave, parental leave paperwork) as reasons for leaving.
