Standard RBAC linters like kube-linter check Kubernetes resources in isolation and miss indirect privilege escalation chains that span multiple objects. A compromised operator service account with permissions to create or patch ClusterRoleBindings can grant itself cluster-admin in three kubectl commands. kube-chainsaw addresses this by parsing all YAML manifests, building a directed permission graph from workloads through service accounts to bindings and roles, and traversing it to detect 15 categories of misconfiguration. It adjusts severity based on binding scope, outputs SARIF for GitHub code scanning, supports suppression files for accepted risks, and integrates into CI pipelines. Compared to tools like KubiScan and rbac-tool that require a live cluster, kube-chainsaw is the only option performing static graph traversal on manifests before deployment.
