Xbox had laid off 379 Zenimax workers in Maryland
Microsoft has laid off 379 ZeniMax employees in Maryland as part of its fifth major round of job cuts in three years. A WARN notice filed with the Maryland Department of Labor confirms 213 workers at ZeniMax Online Studios (developer of The Elder Scrolls Online) and 166 at ZeniMax Media Inc. in Rockville will be affected, with cuts effective September 4, 2026. This is part of a broader Xbox restructuring cutting 3,200 jobs total, also impacting Obsidian and id Software. ZeniMax Online Studios had previously unionized in 2024 with 461 employees, and also lost staff last year after Microsoft cancelled an in-development MMO codenamed Project Blackbird.
