A 7-Segment Clock Built With No Digital Electronics

A teardown of a vintage Lumitime clock by Japanese company Tamura reveals a 7-segment digital-looking display driven entirely by mechanical means rather than digital electronics. A motor turns a gear train that moves metal plates under sliding finger contacts, switching neon segments on and off in sequence to show the time, much like a player piano mechanism. The design offered a clever, cheaper alternative to counters and logic chips during an era when digital electronics were expensive.
