Getting started with DSC 3.0 – Part 2: Managing a Windows service end to end

A hands-on walkthrough shows how to use Microsoft Desired State Configuration (DSC) 3.0 to manage a Windows service end to end. Starting with DSC v3.3 or later (needed for the Microsoft.Windows/Service resource), it covers inspecting current service state with dsc resource get, writing a parameterized YAML configuration document, deliberately introducing drift by changing a service's start type and stopping it, testing for drift with dsc config test, and applying the fix with an elevated dsc config set. It also explains parameter files for reusing the same document with different values, and notes that DSC 3.0 has no Local Configuration Manager, so continuous drift protection requires an external scheduler like a pipeline or Azure Machine Configuration.
