GNU Coreutils 9.12 Released With Performance Optimizations, New uname Option
GNU Coreutils 9.12 has been released with a mix of bug fixes, new options, and performance improvements to the core Linux/Unix utilities. Fixes include a long-standing race condition where chcon, chgrp, chmod, chown, du, and ls could fail during recursive traversal (-R) if files were removed concurrently. The stat and tail commands now support the FailFS and NULLFS filesystem types, and uname gains new -A/--all-labeled options. Performance gains include cut -w running up to 4x faster, uniq -c up to 2.5x faster on systems with unlocked stdio, and sort making better use of memory and parallelism for unknown-sized inputs like pipes. cp, install, and mv now fall back to a standard copy when --reflink=auto fails, and mv warns when copying extended attributes fails. Other fixes address a buffer over-read in factor and various Solaris-specific bugs.
