Graph Engineering Isn’t About More Connections — It’s About Which Ones Get Used
A controlled, reproducible experiment with 8 deterministic agents and 50 runs across five relationship-density levels (20%-100%) found that information recovery stayed flat, roughly 92-98%, regardless of how many communication pathways were open. However, edge utilization dropped sharply as density rose: at 20% density agents used ~97% of configured edges, but at 100% density only ~47% were actually used. The conclusion is that the number of configured connections matters less than how many are behaviorally used, and the experiment deliberately used a rule-based agent policy instead of live LLM calls to guarantee full reproducibility and zero API cost.
