GSoC 2026 Final Report | Modernizing Haiku's Bluetooth Stack: HID Profile Implementation

A student's final Google Summer of Code 2026 report details modernizing Haiku's Bluetooth stack, including HCI command completion, a connection logic refactor moving state into the Bluetooth Server, Link Key storage for persistent pairing, a new SDP client for service discovery, and a working HID profile enabling Bluetooth mice and keyboards. The keyboard implementation still drops packets, suspected to be a kernel HID parsing issue. Future work includes Bluetooth Low Energy support, audio profiles (A2DP/HFP), vendor-specific dongle firmware upload, moving HID parsing to userland, and a dedicated Security Manager module. The author also reflects on challenges navigating a large C++ codebase, parsing Bluetooth specs, and debugging numerous kernel panics using print statements, GDB, and Wireshark.
