Mold 3.0 High Speed Linker Released Following Rust Rewrite
Mold, the high-speed alternative linker to GNU Gold/LD and LLVM LLD, has reached version 3.0, marking the first stable release of its rewrite from C++ to Rust. Mold 3.0 is a drop-in replacement for the last C++ release (2.42.1), requires Rust 1.95 or later, drops the Intel oneTBB dependency, and switches from CMake to Cargo as its build system. The 3.x series focuses on closing remaining compatibility gaps with GNU ld, particularly around linker script support, with the long-term goal of becoming the default linker on Linux distributions. The Rust rewrite is also said to improve safety when handling corrupted input files and fixed numerous bugs along the way.
