My Coding Agents: Off My Laptop and Onto a Remote Server

A developer describes moving AI coding agents off a laptop and onto a home server running Proxmox, where each client project gets its own isolated VM reachable over a private Tailscale network. The setup addresses two problems: agent runs dying when the laptop closes, and the risk of credentials or context bleeding between clients on a shared machine. The piece details the hardware (12-core Ryzen, 128GB RAM, ZFS pools), the thin Ubuntu template with cloud-init, Tailscale ACLs plus Proxmox firewall rules for defense in depth, the herdr terminal multiplexer for resuming Claude Code and Codex sessions after reboots, and lessons learned around writing a spec-first contract, verifying isolation claims, and treating teardown as half the VM lifecycle.
