PrivacyLib: Privacy Controls at the Data Access Boundary
Meta built PrivacyLib, a shared library that enforces privacy rules at the point where services access data, instead of implementing each requirement separately in every system. It runs billions of checks per second inside the clients of hundreds of data and processing systems, covering more than a hundred access libraries and millions of assets accessed daily. Modules like Policy Zones (purpose limitation) and Privacy Probes (data flow discovery) plug into the same integration, so adding a capability to already-covered systems takes days instead of months. Annotation and module changes roll out through simulation against real traffic and staged percentage rollouts to avoid fleet-wide breakage. For AI agents, a companion runtime called AgentLib propagates session context on supported paths so PrivacyLib can block disallowed data access where controls are enabled, even when an agent uses a tool its developer did not anticipate.
