SvelteKit 3 puts heat on Next.js with radical approach to RPCs
SvelteKit 3's release candidate introduces remote functions as a first-class, non-experimental feature alongside traditional load functions. Remote functions let individual components fetch or mutate server data directly, without page-wide refreshes or top-down route loaders, while preserving type safety. Vercel core developer Simon Holthausen and developer Scott Tolinski praise the approach as a cleaner rethink of RPCs compared to Next.js's Server Functions (formerly Server Actions), which were built mainly for writing data rather than querying it. A separate benchmark found SvelteKit's SSR HTML payload roughly three times smaller than Next.js for an equivalent product page. Vercel, which sponsors Svelte creator Rich Harris and manages Next.js, says both approaches reflect a shared industry trend toward typed, server-callable functions.
