Your PSU still follows a color-coding standard that’s decades older than your PC, but there's a reason why

PSU wire color codes trace back to the AT standard from 1984 and were carried into the ATX standard introduced by Intel in 1995. Black, red, yellow, and blue wires came from the older AT and Molex conventions, while ATX added orange (+3.3V), purple (+5V standby), green (power on/off), and gray (power good) wires. The scheme hasn't changed in over three decades because voltages remain the same and changing it would require costly retraining and re-education with no practical benefit. Most PC builders never need to know this, but tinkerers repurposing old PSUs as bench supplies or diagnosing dead systems with a multimeter rely on it. Some Dell PCs deviate from the standard color assignments, making PSU swaps risky.
