Amazon's secret 'Moonraker' project makes Alexa an AI agent
Amazon is developing a secret project codenamed Moonraker to transform Alexa into an AI agent capable of chaining multistep tasks from a single request, such as booking a ride and texting a friend simultaneously. Internal planning documents reveal it is Alexa+'s most expensive new initiative, with GPU costs projected to exceed $100 million in 2026 alone. The project uses Nvidia GPUs and was tested with an Anthropic Claude Sonnet model for reasoning. Despite Alexa+ already showing engagement gains — users talk to it twice as much and order three times more — the initiative faces internal debate over cost and potential scaling back. The move puts Amazon in direct competition with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the agentic AI space.
