AMD P-State Linux Driver Patches Can Boost 1%-Low FPS Gaming Performance By 31%

A Meta Linux kernel engineer has proposed patches for the AMD P-State driver introducing a per-core Energy Performance Preference (EPP) boost feature called 'epp_boost'. The feature targets gaming workloads where threads frequently sleep briefly (e.g., waiting on GPU fences), causing frequency droops that inflate frame-time tail latency. Instead of globally forcing performance mode — which wastes power on handhelds like the Steam Deck where CPU and GPU share a power budget — the patch samples each core's C0 residency every 10ms and temporarily sets EPP to performance only on cores that are at least 50% busy, restoring normal policy after 300ms of inactivity. Benchmarks on the Steam Deck using Civilization VI show a 31.8% improvement in 1%-low FPS and 4.1% better p99 frame time. The feature is opt-in via the kernel parameter amd_pstate.epp_boost=1 and still needs review before potential mainlining.
