Automated blocking and query alerts for Amazon RDS for SQL Server

A walkthrough explains how to build a serverless monitoring solution for Amazon RDS for SQL Server that detects blocking chains and long-running queries. It uses AWS Lambda (with the pytds library) on a one-minute EventBridge schedule to query DMVs like sys.dm_exec_requests, traces root blockers via a recursive CTE, publishes custom CloudWatch metrics, and sends HTML email alerts through Amazon SES. The solution requires a dedicated least-privilege monitoring user with VIEW SERVER STATE and VIEW ANY DEFINITION permissions, credentials stored in Secrets Manager, and runs at an estimated cost of about $2.57 per month.
