Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic (released November 2024) that solves the M×N integration problem in agentic AI — where M models and N tools would otherwise require M×N custom connectors. Acting like a 'USB for AI agents,' MCP defines a client-server architecture with three participants (Host, Client, Server) and three capability types (Tools, Resources, Prompts). A minimal Python MCP server can be built with the official SDK using the FastMCP class and the @mcp.tool() decorator, enabling any MCP-compatible agent to discover and call tools dynamically. MCP has seen rapid adoption: OpenAI and Google both adopted it in 2025, and the combined Python/TypeScript SDKs reached 97 million monthly downloads by March 2026.
