The Golden Spike, and Resurrecting the Vale(n) Programming Language

Evan Ovadia, creator of the Vale programming language, describes his year-long effort building a new experimental language called Valen with true, deep interop with Rust, going beyond typical C-ABI bindings. The post walks through the technical challenges of cross-language generics, running rustc as a library via rustc_driver, patching the Rust compiler to expose monomorphizer callbacks, and getting Valen closures to implement Rust traits inline (open interface constructors). He achieved a working demo where a Valen program calls into a Rust graphics library (using wgpu) for screen-space refraction rendering, with Rust calling back into Valen code via closures. The post also previews plans to extend group borrowing (a flexible alternative to Rust's borrow checker) across the language boundary for memory-safe interop, though this remains unimplemented and unbenchmarked.
