Using LineageOS For Phones And DIY Smart TVs Is Pretty Nifty

A personal account of installing LineageOS, the open-source Android fork descended from CyanogenMod, on an old 2016 Xiaomi Mi 5 phone and on a Raspberry Pi 4 running the Android TV build. The phone install involved bootloader unlocking, fastboot driver hunting, and ADB sideloading, eventually bringing a phone stuck on Android 8.0 up to Android 15. The Raspberry Pi install, using a community port by 'Konga', was far simpler (just flashing an SD card) and worked out of the box including hardware video decoding, with Android 16 available. The piece closes with reflections on the benefits of a bloatware-free, more developer-friendly Android experience on both phones and DIY smart TVs.
