Attackers Hijack Exposed AI Endpoints to Power Offensive Ops

Zenity researchers documented three distinct attack campaigns between March and May in which threat actors hijacked exposed AI inference endpoints (Ollama and LiteLLM) to power offensive operations — without needing any software exploit or special authentication. Attackers simply configured their own AI agents or clients to use the exposed endpoints as model backends, sending full agent payloads including system prompts and tool definitions. Two campaigns involved autonomous penetration testing frameworks (Strix and HexStrike AI), while a third used an OpenAI Codex agent for web reverse-engineering. The root causes are weak defaults: Ollama ships with no built-in authentication and LiteLLM's authentication is opt-in. Recommendations include not exposing AI backends to the internet, requiring real authentication, rejecting placeholder keys, and monitoring request bodies for full-agent payloads.
