Congress's AI bill pile-up: cure cancer, cage chatbots
US Congress introduced a wave of AI-related bills around 4 July, pulling in opposite directions. Pro-deployment bills would use AI for paediatric cancer research, tax fraud detection, and border surveillance. Restrictive bills would mandate chatbot safeguards for minors, require metadata labelling of AI-generated content, and impose federal certification for data centres. Senator Markey bundled ten existing bills into an AI Accountability Agenda covering worker rights, child privacy, and algorithmic bias. Almost none of these bills are expected to pass, but they reveal where political pressure is building: child safety, content labelling, and data-centre siting are the three main friction points between AI expansion and public concern.
