Funding open-source software without compromising it
Funding open-source software sustainably is notoriously difficult. Donations are unreliable, open-core models compromise the project, and grants have restrictive eligibility requirements. The author proposes a hybrid model: keep the software truly open-source (AGPL or dual-licensed), but maintain a private upstream repository where active development, bug tracking, and patch submissions happen — accessible only to paying supporters. A public mirror receives delayed updates (e.g., every three months), except for critical security fixes. This creates a financial incentive to subscribe while preserving the open-source nature of the code. The author acknowledges significant challenges: excluding users who can't afford to pay, low subscriber counts, technical integration with payment systems, and the fundamental problem that this model still requires a product people are willing to pay for — which rules out something like a programming language.
