OpenAI is folding Codex into the ChatGPT app — and taking aim at Claude Cowork
OpenAI announced ChatGPT Work, a Codex-powered agentic tool for knowledge workers that directly competes with Anthropic's Claude Cowork. The Codex desktop app is being merged into the ChatGPT desktop app, with Codex retaining its developer-focused coding experience while ChatGPT Work handles broader agentic workflows involving documents, spreadsheets, and third-party integrations like Slack, Google Drive, and CRM tools. ChatGPT Work is available on desktop, web, and mobile from launch — an advantage over Claude Cowork's initially desktop-only approach. OpenAI is also sunsetting its standalone Atlas browser in favor of a new Chrome extension that brings ChatGPT into the Chrome sidebar.
