The Making Of Super Mario 64 – full Giles Goddard interview (2001)

A long-form, previously unpublished 2001 interview with Nintendo programmer Giles Goddard covers the making of Super Mario 64, including early prototyping on SGI Onyx/Indy emulators before N64 hardware existed, the invention of the morphing Mario face demo, the evolution of the camera system by programmer Takumi Kawagoe, patent disputes with Sega over camera switching, controller prototyping (over 100 variants before settling on the seven-sided stick), Miyamoto's role focusing almost entirely on movement and camera feel, and design tricks used to fake large explorable worlds and water physics within N64 hardware limits.
