The Tech Behind Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's Anvil Engine
Ubisoft's lead producer on Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced details the technical work behind rebuilding the 2013 classic on the latest Anvil engine (previously used for AC Shadows). Key highlights include eliminating all loading screens via seamless world streaming, fully reworked water simulation with improved transparency, caustics, foam, and wave simulation, adoption of Micropolygon (virtual geometry), Physically Based Rendering, and Ray Traced Global Illumination running even in 60 FPS performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X. A software raytracing fallback was also implemented for older PC GPUs. Naval gameplay was modernized with dynamic sails, simulated ropes, and a diegetic compass replacing the minimap. The team worked with original developers to preserve Edward Kenway's story while smoothing gameplay frustrations like hard-fail missions.
