How to Test a ChatBot – Think Like a Tester

Testing a chatbot requires different strategies than testing deterministic software because responses vary each time. Key approaches include verifying the chatbot refuses out-of-scope requests (like medical advice), checking security boundaries (such as preventing regular users from accessing admin or other users' data), validating response accuracy against a known database of correct answers, enforcing style guardrails (tone, response length, handling corrections), and testing truthfulness by checking whether the bot admits uncertainty rather than fabricating answers. A bookstore chatbot example illustrates each testing category with sample queries and responses.
