Make tmux the OS

A long-form thought experiment proposes rethinking desktop window management around the model of tmux: scrollable, task-oriented, session-persisted workspaces instead of overlapping windows. The piece surveys decades of HCI research (Rooms, WindowScape, display space management studies) and past failed attempts (Windows Timeline, Windows Sets, Stage Manager, KDE Activities, Arc browser) to explain why task-based window management keeps dying despite being a known-good idea. It proposes an infinite-canvas design with viewports per monitor, privacy as a machine-state-driven flag, browser tabs as first-class task members, and a local LLM that proposes window layouts via a constrained MCP server rather than touching the window manager directly. The author then documents concrete failures encountered while prototyping the idea in a Linux VM: privacy-by-idle-detection backfires because reading looks idle, append-only infinite canvases never garbage-collect and become overwhelming, and the design ironically requires surveillance-level focus telemetry to work.
