From Awareness to Engineered Accessibility in Open Source
The Merge Forward Neurodiversity group within the CNCF community traces its evolution from individual awareness strategies to system-level 'engineered accessibility' in open source. Drawing on sessions at KubeCon NA 2025, KubeCon EU 2026, and Open Source Summit NA 2026, the post argues that accessibility should be an architectural responsibility — not an individual adaptation burden. Key themes include reducing cognitive friction in documentation and governance, moving beyond the 'neurotalent superpower' narrative, building peer mentorship networks, and developing practical Open Practice Library resources for neurodiversity-aware collaboration. The call to action is for maintainers and organizations to redesign workflows, onboarding, and communication norms toward more asynchronous and inclusive defaults.
