Digital IDs and the AI threat: verification must evolve, not just digitise

The UK's rollout of digital IDs for age verification across England and Wales is examined through a fraud-prevention lens, arguing that digitizing identity checks shifts rather than eliminates fraud risk. Research from fraud-detection firm Finovox finds 11% of Britons admit to document fraud, 67% say AI makes it easier, and 82% of attempts succeed. The piece warns that AI enables automated document forgery, synthetic identities, and deepfake biometrics that can bypass facial recognition and liveness checks, and argues digital ID systems need advanced liveness detection, behavioral biometrics, and adaptive risk-based authentication to actually defend against these evolving threats.
