SpaceX and NVIDIA announced Starmind AI1, a plan to put AI data centers in low Earth orbit using Vera CPUs and Rubin GPUs, Starlink laser links, and a goal of up to a million satellites built at SpaceX's Gigasat Factory in Texas. The piece argues the concept faces severe practical hurdles: radiative-only cooling requiring 160-square-meter ammonia radiators per satellite, networking limited by Starlink's laser-link bandwidth and latency (unsuitable for tightly coupled GPU training), risks from orbital debris, Kessler events, anti-satellite weapons, and solar storms, and a Wood Mackenzie estimate that a 1GW orbital data center would cost $170 billion, over three times a terrestrial equivalent, requiring a 70% cost reduction to reach parity.
