Don't outsource the spark: how to balance human thinking and AI

Atlassian's Teamwork Lab ran two studies examining when AI helps or hurts creative brainstorming. AI gave an early speed and breadth boost (up to 43% more ideas), but starting with AI reduced feelings of ownership, joy, and rewarding experience for participants. Peak originality actually came from reviewing a colleague's ideas before brainstorming solo, outperforming both solo work and AI-assisted brainstorming. Participants also struggled to accurately judge which of their rounds was most creative, especially those using AI. The recommendation: let humans struggle with a problem first, cross-pollinate ideas among teammates, then use AI to expand and polish rather than to generate from a blank slate.
