Durable Task in the Real World: What Problems Does It Actually Solve?
A deep dive into when durable execution frameworks like Durable Task actually solve real problems, walking through five concrete scenarios: invoice approval workflows that need to remember pending reviews, Azure tenant provisioning where ARM already handles much of the dependency graph, subscription payment retries where the billing ledger remains authoritative over timeouts, webhook ordering for a breaking-news CMS where durable entities alone cannot serialize external writes, and an AI incident-response agent where the nondeterministic model call must be isolated from the deterministic orchestration logic. Throughout, the author stresses what Durable Task does and does not guarantee: it tracks what completed and where to resume, but it cannot guarantee exactly-once external effects, decide whether a payment truly succeeded, or determine if an AI-proposed action is still safe to execute. The piece closes by previewing upcoming Durable Agents and Durable Workflows extensions to the Microsoft Agent Framework.
