Using Vibration To Make Stuff Stick Contact-Free To Ceilings

Vibration-based contactless adhesion lets objects stick to rigid surfaces without glue or suction cups, as shown in a Steve Mould video featuring a vibrating playing card. The effect differs from a Bernoulli grip: a flexible vibrating object creates standing waves that become travelling waves against a rigid surface, continuously pushing air out of the gap and lowering pressure to produce suction. The demo even held a person's weight using a 400-watt transducer, though it failed past a few dozen kilograms, likely due to an insufficiently rigid ceiling. A 2025 paper on 'Micro-Vibration Adhesion' proposes using this principle to help small robots climb walls, achieving an adhesion-to-weight ratio exceeding 51 times.
