You don’t need a team of AI experts. You just need one.

Atlassian's Teamwork Lab analyzed 2,574 participants across 1,271 teams during a company-wide hackathon (ShipIt) and found that having just one AI superuser on a team was associated with an 18-percentage-point increase in the likelihood of producing top-scoring work. AI superusers are defined as those in the top quartile of weekly AI interactions within their function. Team size predicted whether a team shipped at all (each additional member made shipping 79% more likely), while superuser presence predicted quality. Teams with at least one superuser were 19pp more likely to be rated highly innovative, 15pp more likely to have high customer impact, and 14pp more likely to be near project completion. The key takeaway: universal AI fluency isn't necessary — every team needs at least one deep AI user acting as a force multiplier.
