NASA's upcoming CADRE mission will send three small rovers to the Moon to autonomously coordinate exploration without human control, electing a leader, assigning tasks, and replanning as a team when power runs low. Landing as part of the IM-3 launch planned for late 2026, the mission tests whether robot teams can operate unsupervised for the roughly two weeks needed to map lunar terrain, a capability seen as essential for future South Pole missions where communication blackouts, extreme cold, abrasive dust, and lack of GPS make constant human control impractical. Ground tests at JPL already showed the rovers replanning paths together and pausing as a group when one robot's battery ran low.
