An open-source hobby project builds on a prior synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) drone by adding interferometric imaging capability. The creator improved GPS positioning accuracy using RTK/PPK techniques, stabilized the radar's phase-locked loop, sped up SD card data recording with custom compression, and developed software to compare phase data from two flight passes at different altitudes to generate elevation maps of imaged targets.

A secure approach to determining the position of an entity can enable schemes such as position-based authorization for transactions and tracking of high-value targets. However, classical methods are incapable of providing secure position verification in the untrusted-prover case, meaning that a prover can mislead verifiers about its actual position. Here we propose and experimentally realize a secure position verification protocol that combines quantum optics and relativity within an information-theoretic framework. Using phase-randomized weak coherent states, two verifiers separated by 2 km securely verify the prover’s position with an accuracy better than 75 m. These results establish secure position-based authentication as a practical possibility, paving the way for applications in financial transactions, disaster response and authenticated secure communications. By combining quantum and relativistic physics, it is possible to verify someone’s position remotely without needing to trust them. Such a position verification protocol has now been introduced and demonstrated with a quantum optics experiment.
The ESD September/October eBook explores how embedded system design for military/aerospace applications is changing to meet requirements for more compute, secure connectivity, and real-time control.
A hobbyist built a custom HDMI video and audio output adapter for the TRS-80 Color Computer 2, using a Tang Nano board with a Gowin GW1N-1 FPGA to snoop the digital signals feeding the MC6847 video chip and convert them into a modern HDMI signal, plus an analog-to-digital converter to carry the sound over the same cable. The project was born after the maker missed out on commercial CoCoVGA and CoCoDV upgrade boards, which were sold out.
A hobbyist known as Wenting built an open-source digital back for the Mamiya Super 23 medium format film camera, dubbed the Sitina B220M. It uses a 22 megapixel Kodak KAF-22000CE full-frame CCD sensor that closely matches the exposure area of the original 120 film rolls. The digital processing runs on a Xilinx Zynq 7010 SoC, combining its Cortex-A9 cores with its onboard FPGA. This is a scaled-down follow-up to Wenting's earlier fully custom mirrorless digital camera project, focusing this time solely on the digital back rather than the whole camera body.
A homebrew computer built by maniek86 around a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 10 MHz features a genuine PCI bus, implemented using a Xilinx Spartan II FPGA acting as a PCI bridge and an XC95144XL CPLD for glue logic. The machine has 1 MB of SRAM, 4 KB of ROM, and an MC68681P chip serving as UART, timer, and I/O controller. It offers two 32-bit, 5-volt PCI slots with interrupt support (but no bus mastering), and has been tested with a PCI serial expansion card and a Cirrus VGA adapter. The build is assembled on protoboard rather than a custom PCB, and its creator previously built an FPGA-based 486-compatible single-board computer.
Chiplet-based FPGAs for space applications split compute and I/O to balance processing capacity, radiation tolerance, power, and lifecycle requirements.
